COASTAL EROSION

Welcome back!  In this section each group will do more research on your wetlands area.  After your class views and discusses the video on coastal erosion, your teacher will direct you to look at some of the websites below and develop a progression of erosion that has occurred over the years at your wetlands site.  You will also have to predict the erosion that will happen if nothing is done to protect your wetlands area.

Now that you know your area, what lives there, and how the hurricanes and levees are connected to the area, let's talk about how all of these elements are impacting your area.  With all of these elements working together, we are losing more and more of the region as time progresses.  According to scientists, Louisiana wetlands are being converted to open water at a rate of 30 to 35 square miles per year.

Performance Objectives:

    You will be able to:
    1.  Identify coastal erosion and the affects on your area.
    2.  Create PowerPoint slides that describe the affect of the coastal erosion & predict future land loss.

Activity #1:

    You will:
    1.  Participate in class discussion on coastal erosion & how it affects the wetlands. This will focus on what coastal erosion actually is and how much land is lost each year.
    2.  Complete Group Activity.

Activity #2:

    You will:
Use the internet resources above and research coastal erosion in your area.  Then create 2 PowerPoint slides that describe:
o How much land is being lost from your area each year.
o How much land will be lost after 10 years.
