COASTAL RESTORATION

We are now winding down.  You have learned all about the wetlands.  You have learned about the benefits and dangers of Hurricanes and Levees, and you have learned about the dangers of coastal erosion.  Now it’s time to learn about improving our coasts, the costs, the benefits, and how you can be a part of it.

Now that you understand the importance of the coastal wetlands, it is time to help improve it.  There are several projects in the state of Louisiana whose goal is to help improve or restore the Louisiana Wetlands as close to their natural existence as possible.  You will discuss those you already know about, and learn more other programs you may not have heard of.  It's time to discuss whether Louisiana and its people are doing all they can to help restore the depleting wetland areas.

Performance Objectives:

        You will be able to:
        1.  Identify & describe the current programs that LA has in place to help restore the wetlands.
        2.  Create slides that reflect your ideas on Coastal Restoration & create an improvement plan.

Activity #1:

        You will:

Participate in class discussion on what is being done to restore Louisiana’s wetlands and what we can do to help stop the loss of the wetlands.

Activity #2:

        You will:

Create at least 2 slides that:
o reflect on your ideas to restore the wetlands

Activity #3:

        You will:

Create an improvement plan that includes suggestions that you and your classmates can implement. (1 page)
Now it's your turn.  Provide a detailed improvement plan incorporating how you would improve or restore your region's wetlands.  Are there plants that need to be planted, animals that need to be imported, fish that need to be swamped?  Are there elements within your region that need to be removed in order to help improve the wetland's existence?  What can you and your classmates do to help restore Louisiana's wetlands?  It's your choice...make it a good one.  Our wetlands depend on it!
