WETLANDS 101

C’mon in to the Wetland! Coastal Roots High and our “friends” Welcome You!

After your teacher has presented information on the Louisiana Wetlands via video and discussion, you will be randomly assigned to groups by your teacher and will begin your investigation of the wetlands of your state and how YOU are an important part of the future of Louisiana wetlands.  Your teacher will also assign each group to one of the regions listed below.  Your teacher may also choose to give a pretest just to see how much you already know about wetlands.

Here are the regions we will focus on for this project:

Region 1:  St. Tammany and Orleans

Region 2:  St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Jefferson

Region 3:  Lafourche and Terrebonne

Region 4:  Vermillion, Iberia and St. Mary

Region 5:  Cameron

Region 6:  Tangipahoa

Performance Objectives:

    You will be able to:
        1.  Identify the plants, animals, and environmental factors that affect your wetlands.
        2.  Create a PowerPoint slide that describes the plants, animals, and environmental factors that affect your assigned areas.

Activity #1

    You will:
        1.  Participate in class discussion on plants, animals, and environmental factors that affect the wetlands. (Introduction).
Discuss elements of your daily life and try to figure out whether or not what you do contributes to depletion of the wetlands.
        2.  View the What is a Wetland? PowerPoint or read the notes from the PowerPoint, given to you by the teacher.

Activity #2

After you have viewed the PowerPoint, your teacher will ask you some questions to help you review the information.

You will then be able to:
Research using the internet & complete 5 slides that will introduce:
o Name of the Region (title slide)
o Listing of the animals that inhabit your region (incorporate graphics)
o Listing of the fish that inhabit your area (incorporate graphics)
o Listing of the plants that are native to your area (incorporate graphics)
o List 3 - 4 jobs related to your wetland area

When you complete this and get your teacher’s OKAY – you can move on to the EXTRA's.

Some fun activities for practice

Here are some EXTRA ways to learn about the wetlands and how it functions as a biome.

    • When your group is done, you can write a letter to another person in school telling them about wetlands in Louisiana and their function. You’ll want to include what you believe would be lost if we don’t save the wetlands.

    • You may also develop a poster in to hang in you’re the classroom or hall to call attention to the importance of the Louisiana wetlands. The poster should include graphics and at least one function of the wetlands that makes them important

    • Students may work individually or quietly in your group to create a poem or short story about the wetlands.
