Sociology of Medicine

The sociology of medicine is concerned with how is medicine practiced, from the social rather than the technical standpoint. In other words a sociologist wants to look at issues such as the availability of medical care, rather than how to do an appendectomy.

The World Health Organization (WHO), defines health as ". . . a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity", which seems pretty broad at first; but brings up the concept that health affects everything we do. If you are not "well", it can interfere with your ability to learn, to work, to play, to interact with family and friends.

Wellness - the the lack of it, goes beyond seeing a doctor, or taking a pill. It can be a reason for missing work or school, or even determine whether or not you get a job or an education. It can affect nutrition (as well as being affected by it), as in the joke "I lost ten pounds on this great new diet - they call it the flu."
