Field Trips
Fall 2002
The Fall 2002 Cultural Geography class went on two field trips. The first was a walking tour of memorialized places on the campus of Northwestern State University, including various monuments to buildings lost to fire, to the Native American trail that passed through the campus, and the three columns that stand as the symbol of the University. The second tour was of sacred spaces in Natchitoches, and included the Catholic Cemetery, which is on a ridge overlooking the town, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which is across from the old Courthouse and represents the center of the town. The tour also included a visit to Trinity Episcopal Church, First United Methodist Church, and First Baptist Church. This part of the tour focused on the change in iconography and imagery from the ornate Catholich Church to the very simple Baptist Church.
