"Nissan Challenge 2002"
Geography 3050
Geography of North America
You are key employees of the Economic Development Agency for your state. The Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan wants to locate a new $100 million operation somewhere in the southern part of the United States to build cars for the US market. The president of Nissan has invited representatives from each state under consideration to come to an event he is calling "Nissan Challenge 2002" to present to the board of directors and the shareholders of Nissan two sites in each state for consideration by the company. He is specifically looking for cultural and economic factors that would attract the factory to your state. Some of the economic factors associated with your sites might include: accessibility (highways, ports, railroads), labor force, other industries in the areas, housing, cost of living, etc. Some of the cultural factors might include: educational facilities (colleges and universities, quality of schools), sports, arts organizations, museums, zoos and other attractions, etc. Weather and climate may be something to include as well. He wants to see maps, photos, and hopefully a small brochure showing your proposed areas and why they would be perfect for Nissan. The date of the event is April 30, 2002.
This was the task for the Geography 3050, Geography of North America, class in the Spring semester. The class had a good time doing the project, and around 100 students from Geography 1010, 1020, and 2010 attended, lured by the promise of extra credit. They filled out ranking sheets for the project, which I collected and used in the final grade. A good time was had by all!
Below are some pictures of the day.

Students from other classes check out projects.

Students ranked the various projects on a scale of 1-5 on the
presentation, brochures, amount of information, and quality of
maps.

The students took their roles very seriously.
Below are examples of student projects.

They were a great group of students, and a lot of fun to have in
class!
